Message From Chairman
Dear all,
Availability of abundant water flowing down and gradient geo-physical features are the main attraction of hydro-power development and can play a major role in the economic growth of Nepal. The Government of Nepal (GoN) has opened a private sector hydropower development policy since 2001, on standing that has grounded many projects, though it is absurd for us in domestic consumption. On one hand, we have a huge demand for ourselves and on the other, we need to export the energy to balance the economic prosperity of Nepal.
As per the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), power demand in the national electricity grid is currently over 1,500 megawatts (MW), whereas its installed generation capacity is less than 850 MW from June to October (wet season). Currently, around 95% of the country’s grid electricity is supplied through hydropower plants. However, due to low river flows, the generation capacity is less than 400 MW in the dry season (December to April). Consequently, grid connected consumers are suffering long hours of load-shedding due to the fact that the NEA has been importing expensive electricity from India to fulfil this need, which is pity for nation. This is the right time for private sector and government to harmonize for the development of hydropower projects to fulfil the demand and balance of payment to the neighbouring country India.
Chhyangdi Hydropower Limited (CHPL) is committed to developing and operating the hydropower plants in Nepal. We have successfully developed and are operating the Chhandi Khola small hydro power (2mW) and sustaining the electricity on a national grid under the power purchase agreement with the NEA at Udipur substation in the Lamjung District. Currently, we are developing our next project by the name of Upper Chhandi Khola small hydropower (4mW) in same river. The company has created a plan to develop and operate numerous projects in the future to maximize the profitability of investors and harness the resources, ultimately, fulfilling the demands of the nation.
Last but not the least, I would like to thank my staff, shareholders, stake holders, and well wishers, whose support have led us to the forefront of Nepal’s hydropower sector. I look forward to your continued support as we work towards energizing Nepal to meet its goal of sustainable socio-economic development, as well as serving our clients beyond our borders.
Regards,
Capt. Rameshwor Thapa
